Ah, summer. The sun is out, the evenings are light, and it’s the perfect time for the Swallowtail WI to showcase their picnicking skills at a summer social bathed in warmth. Well, that was the plan. But, of course, with this being Britain and the rain rudely interrupting, our summer social took place indoors.
However, the Women’s Institute didn’t build its formidable reputation on being defeated by a little thing like the rubbish weather, and the Swallowtails would never dream of letting the side down. So while we were forced to take cover so we could enjoy tables full of gorgeous sweet and savoury treats, we also got out into the great outdoors and had some fun. There’s nothing like torrential rain to give a game of ‘knock over water bottles with a ball in a sock attached to your head’ an extra dimension. There were plenty of laughs as our game girls got stuck into the crazy antics, as well as some nail-biting rounds of Jenga that were not for the faint hearted. We also got in some much-needed rounders practice ahead of a game with Old Catton Grove WI next month. Challenge accepted, ladies! The sun didn’t make an appearance, but there was so much warmth as the Swallowtails laughed the night away, and formed even stronger bonds of friendship. Next month, we’ll celebrate our 1st birthday, and we’ve already grown so much as a group. Here’s hoping that summer decides to put in a proper appearance in 2017!
